Big media growth halted?

Reuters is reporting that the Bush’s administration won’t press for an appeal of a Supreme Court ruling preventing large media companies from buying more media companies. This appears to be a win for fairness, diversity, and local news coverage. Unfortunately only time will tell if we can turn the destructive tide of big media.

Personally I predict that the big corporate media will become so big that it won’t be able to see it’s own feet or the ground where local communities live. The void created by a lack of local media coverage will be filled by grassroots journalist and be better for us all. If newspaper businesses like the Greensboro News & Record reform themselves from the inside they can set a good example of responsible, transparent community business practice. Maybe just maybe other small and medium sized businesses will follow suit and reform America from the bottom up.
