The session I went to this morning was called Learning to Learn: Urban Youth, Technology Literacy and Youth Development by Hopeworks N’ Camden. This session was very special. Not only did the HopeWorks Executive Director Father Jeff Putthoff speak but so did the young employees and trainees in their program. What a impressive educational oportunity! Public speaking is hard. It’s so cool they could practice. Their individual stories are inspiring and they spoke well. This program sounds very similar to the vision of Palante in Carrboro. I belive the Durham Literacy Center could learn from HopeWorks, too. I’ve heard several people with fledling and established teen programs in Raleigh and Durham who want to do something similar. ctcnet2005

CTCnet Saturday
9:30-10:30

Learning to Learn: Urban Youth, Technology Literacy and Youth Development

Father Jeff

Hopeworks N’ Camden
www.hopeworks.org

A youth development ORG.
Training program not a school. Don’t call the teens students. Don’t want to get into the pedagogy of the teacher has the knowledge and the teacher doesn’t.

Traditional Literacy Program too. Lots of the training programs are run like a business.

“Youth Meeting the Future”

Skills Training Subjects
Training web design and geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Computer Hardware construction
Video Editing
Business skills

Youth 14-23

60% drop out rate
20% adult employment rate
5600 per capita income

Churches – Catholic and Lutheran churches
Juvenile System – some youth are in jail attend training on the HopeWorks site
Youth Recruitment – positive word of mouth from the youth

Up to 15 college credits, help teens get in college and find jobs

Partnerships

Fee For services

+Congregations
+Community Partners
+ Rotary Club
+ Businesses

“The point of HW is to engage learning. Learning to Learn.”

Rolling Curriculum!
Self Paced

No open lab. Most web surfing is not allowed. The computers are there for work training.

Day Training Pay
Trainees are paid per completion of exams and attaining point scores. Not just for showing up.

E-Mentoring via Email.

Federal Program to help allow students to get into college WITHOUT a high school diploma or a GED.

The folks at HW haven’t had much luck with GED programs. Seems that students work to get their GED then just stop their education.

In teen programs what percentage of students who get their GED go on to college?
What percentage of students who get their GED go on to get a college degree?

“It’s important to not to tell youth what do to. But to tell youth how it is.”

“I’m learning how to be professional.” –Trainee

GIS program is really cool. The teens are collection information in their city and turning it into readable maps.
Examples:
The number of street lights in the city of Camden.
Survey the status of housing.

Notes from the Media Literacy for Healthy and Just Communities session here at the CTCnet Con. The presentation was given by Andrea I. Quijada who is the Director of Educational Programs at the New Mexico Media Literacy Project in Albuquerque, NM. It was wonderful introduction to the concepts and methods they use to teach media literacy. This is one of the most IMPORTANT educational programs I’ve ever seen. PLUS be sure to listen to the podcast interview with Andrea! ctcnet2005

CTCnet Friday

1:30 – 3:30

Media Literacy for Healthy and Just Communities

Analyzing Ads

Asking Questions

Who paid for the ad?
Who are they trying to reach with the ad?
What cultural references are being made?

Advertisers are only telling us one side of the story.
What aren’t they telling us?

TV commercials designed to get kids to nag Mom and Dad to buy stuff.

Targeting young children early (0-5 years) can form very strong brand loyalty.

The Warm and Fuzzy Technique – ex. Polar Bear Coke Ad

One of the techniques in Media Literacy education is “Don’t dictate behavior” (don’t tell what people to do)

10:30 am – 12:00 pm
WSIS
The World Summit on the information Society

Andy Carvin
Policy – The UN, NGOs, and other groups working for a civil society are debating how to bridge the digital divide.

Mark Surman
Networking – It’s important that CTC groups and grassroots NPOs communicate with policy makers developing plans to bridge the Global Digital Divide.

www.wsis-cs.org

Q: (audience) What affect do multinational corporations have on the world summit?

A: (Andy Carvin): “Not as much as you think.” They rather go straight to “the horses mouth”. Big debate on how Civil Society should collaborate with the private sector.

Q (audience): Why isn’t the CTCnet involved directly in the WTO?
A: (john Zoltner) It’s easier to work with WISIS at this point. Trying to get funding to go to WSIS is difficult. Micro$oft funded CTCnet’s participation in WSIS last year.

Q: What are the characteristics of a local elected official that might attend a WSIS event?

A: (me)
+ Personal involvement in tech, not a techie really, a blogger perhaps
+ Interest in the effects of tech on local communities in need
+ Open to putting the digital divide in their political platform

MI: I want to educate and motivate local politicians towards working on bridging the digital divide.

Cleveland native, accomplished, very impressive education, one of the first African American women leaders in IT.

MI: All conferences must start with someone having issues getting PowerPoint to run.

Cleveland Landscape
+ “Cleveland is rated #1 in Poverty “

“Not something we’re proud about.”

MI: I see now why CTC choose Cleveland as an event city. There seems to be such incredible need to provide tech training for people to help overcome poverty. Despite the hardship there are opportunities. VISTAs can do so much good here.

MI: I noticed yesterday that many of the streets were torn up due to construction. Ms. Mayberry-Stewart says they are laying fiber to build a network. Awesome!

The Mayor Jane L. Campbell Mayor of Cleveland has proclaimed June 16, 2005 Digital Literacy Day in Cleveland, OH in partnership with CTCnet.

This Thursday I’m flying out to Cleveland, Ohio for the Community Technology Centers Network (CTCnet) 14th Annual Conference. I’ve never been to Cleveland. It’s part of my AmeriCorp VISTA service with the CTCnet VISTA Project. [Thanks to the Durham Literacy Center for paying my way.] I’m really looking forward to seeing all the Boston folks and the other VISTAs I met last September. It’ll be fascinating to hear what everyone has learned and see how folks are holding up. I plan on doing some podcast interviews of VISTAs ’cause they’re SERIOUS grassroots activists. You need to hear these voices! They work very hard to serve and support their communities. Also there should be many folks from the email lists I’ve yet to meet in person. That’ll be cool. PLUS we’re going to the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame!
