Apple the new media Gatekeeper

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

I love Apple computer hardware and software, but Apple is poised to be more of a media gate keeper than an independent media enabler. How will they reconcile this contradiction? How can we reconcile this contradiction?

With the introduction of podcasting (more precisely PODCATCHING) abilities in iTunes 4.9 via the iTunes store Apple sets themselves at the nexus of content and profit with a method to CHARGE people for podcasts. Now this may be great for Adam Curry and Todd Maffin but will it truly be a fair “market” for all podcasters? How can podcasters get as much buzz as Adam Curry? Could I get my face (brand) on the front of the main Apple website? Will Apple help us be that famous? What kind of power and influence do I have to bring to the table to play with Apple the media mogul? Would I even want to go through all the crap to get there? What will my mind and soul look like after that journey?

Just having the ability to sell podcasts via iTunes doesn’t mean you’ll have enough hype to make money. (Making money, meaning you earn more than you spend.) Fact is there are already several 500 pound gorillas in the room with Apple, music, and Podcasting. This could prevent me or any other Podcaster from getting the world wide attention, via the iTunes store, that would allow us to become 500 pound gorillas ourselves. Apple could help us obtain the weight and voice to change our lives and the world. How are you going to act with social responsibility Apple?!

As for me, I rather be famous for 15 people, keep my Podcasts free, and work to amplify the voices of people ignored by Apple and iTunes. I plan on using the tools Apple makes to keep them honest! That’s how I’m going to reconcile my contradiction.

Teens should Opt Out of Military Recruitment

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

When I was about to go to college I needed financial help to do so. My parents contributed very little. I worked summers but the savings just didn’t cut it. So I applied for loans. One of the requirements to receive loans was that I had to register for selective service. This helped the US Government keep track of me. I told them who I was, how old I was, where I lived, and that I was eligible for the draft. Fortunately, I was never drafted. Unfortunately, in American history, we’ve had drafts and lots of young men and women have died.

Now many years later I’m stuck with a TON of financial debt (mostly because of high interest rates). I’ve helped banks make a lot of money. Now I wish I had the foresight in high school to tell the US Government to go to hell and find the money for college elsewhere.

Today high school students have a much more dangerous system to deal with. The so-called “No Child Left Behind Act” [double speak] forces high schools that are receiving college money to report all of this private data about their students. [You give us money we give you fresh bodies to fight and die!] The Washington Post recently reported that the Pentagon is contracting with a company to create a database to aggregate all this info about American children. With modern computers and relational databases it’ll be easy to run reports and create strategies for recruitment and potentially a new draft. Telemarketing, harassment, direct mail, threats, manipulation, bribing, etc. etc.

I just ran across the site MilitaryFreezone.org with a form for high school students to Opt Out of this system of data collection. Students can sign this form with their parents if they are under eighteen or with out if they are over. Here is the meat of the matter:

“Federal public law 107-110, section 9528 of the ESEA, “No Child Left Behind Act” requires school districts to release student names, addresses, and phone numbers to military recruiters upon their request. Students are then called at home by recruiters and pressured to join the military. The law also requires the school district to notify you of your right to Opt-Out from this by requesting that the district not release your information to military recruiters. The completion and return of this form serves as your request to withhold your private information.”

Here is a pdf of the entire form to print out and sign.

Number 8 Unwired BABY!

Tuesday, June 7th, 2005

According to Intel’s ‘Most Unwired Cities Survey‘ Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill ranked number 8 out of a 100 US cities. We ranked ABOVE; Boston, Chicago, LA, Philadelphia, etc.

“Survey findings are based on the number of commercial and public or “free” wireless Internet access points (hotspots), airports with wireless Internet access, and broadband availability. The survey also included community wireless Internet access points, local wireless networks and wireless e-mail devices…”

NASCAR drivers’ salaries and WUNC

Monday, June 6th, 2005

Last week when I heard that our local NPR station, WUNC, was going to have a show about NASCAR I was skeptical. Mainly because I’ve noticed a trend at WUNC, which broadcasts from the “liberal” University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, towards mainstreaming. Mainstream radio content in this case – in this state – is more politically conservative. There’s a ton of evidence for this. Read about the serious error by WUNC over women’s reproductive health here. Plus much more. But let’s look at what I THINK they are doing right.

Fight the hate with LOVE

Friday, May 27th, 2005

Wednesday night May 25, 2005 THREE burning crosses, in separate locations, we’re reported in Durham, NC. Hate group flyers were found at the scene. It’s not easy to explain why this hateful shit happens. But it is NOT impossible to lay some responsibility on right wing politicians in Washington and Raleigh. They have handed Christian religious fanatics momentum and emboldened hate groups. Do they think we’ve stepped back into time where the white man ruled with fear and violence? Is this 1963 or 2005? Thank goodness there were three candle light vigils last night in response. We need a much LOUDER community wide response to this hate filled and illegal event.

Jon Elliston Audio on RadicalRadio.org

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

I just got an email letting me know that the audio I recorded and podcast here recently of Jon Elliston’s talk at the Carrboro Book Fair was included in the playlist of a online streaming radio station called Radical Radio. They found my audio via the A-Infos radio project. I THINK THIS IS GREAT! This is exactly why I put my audio under a Creative Commons license. The more we share the more we learn! Here is the Radical Radio’s MP3 stream link. (a listen.pls file that should open up in iTunes or WinAmp)

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

BBC workers have shut down many BBC broadcasts in protest of the scheduled firing of thousands of employees. I’m so happy to see media workers standing up for themselves! Read what Indymedia UK has to say about it. There are three British unions involved NUJ, BECTU, and AMICUS, according to a report from the National Union of Journalist.
