Here is a recording of the entire talk and group discussion led by the amazing writer Jon Elliston at the Carrboro Book Fair. [See also my interview with Ethan the Book Fair organizer.] He discussed much of the new literature on interrogation and torture in the “war of terror”. A large amount of these books came out after the horrible violence that occurred at Abu Ghraib at the hands of US soldiers. It was fascinating to hear about how much detailed information is available about this horrific crime from the US military and other US government agencies themselves. Chief among them is the Taguba Report that made it into The New Yorker article by Seymour Hirsh that broke this awful story to the US and possibly the world. Many of us at the talk questioned the trustworthiness of all of this government information. If they somehow they let us read these terrifying accounts, what more violence hides under the rocks?

One of the most interesting parts of this recording, IMHO, is the response from the audience after the talk. One gentleman in particular said the talk was “very naive” and proceeded to tell a story about being abused in a southern jail, right here in the good ole’ USA.

For this interview I spoke with Dan Smith, VP of Circulation at the ContraCosta Times (a newspaper in the Bay area of Northern California). We had just finished a tour of the University of Southern California’s Integrated Media Systems Center. I asked him what he thought of the technology demos we had seen? He was impressed by the ‘Serious Games’. They were 3D first person shooter style environments not unlike the look and feel of Doom. Instead of killing people and creatures this ‘Serious Game’ was built to help students learn about biology. This was accomplished by navigating a virtual micro-world inside the human body. It’s wonderful to have Dan’s perspective as a newspaper man. The Mobile Media Conference fostered an interesting confluence of the worlds of news, entertainment, and education.

Should there be more public broadband wi-fi networks and how should they be created? Municipal, Private, or Corporate. This is a very cool conversation that gets to the heart of the matter. Very relevant to some discussions going on here in Chapel Hill, NC. It’s wonderful to get other perspectives, even if I don’t completely agree with them all. mobilemedia

In case your wondering… The original file for this podcast AA_N&R_DaveWiner.mp3 still exists here. http://www.audioactivism.org/audio/AA_N&R_DaveWiner.mp3

The MP3 and Ogg links above goto a file that is a copy with a different name and the exact same content as the original. I had to change the name (remove the Ampersand – &) of the file names so my RSS xml file would parse correctly and be compliant xml. Goal: Keep all podcatching clients happy.

In part two of this interview I posed two questions, to Ed, that were originally posted over at the Citizen Journalism Forum on the Digital Divide Network web site. Basically the questions were, “Why be a Citizen Journalist & what about Libel?” [During the interview I read the post verbatum] Thanks for asking them Henry!

Ed Cone is a senior writer at Ziff Davis Media and has opinion column at the News & Record in Greensboro, NC.
